Commemoration of Constantine Palaiologos

Since many years there is an annual commemoration taking place at the St. Johannes church. It is dedicated to the brave ruler Constantine Palaiologos and all of his supporters during the fall of Constantinople in the year 1453.

In the cathedral of Saint George, many years now, has been established an annual commemoration on behalf of the souls "of the heroic emperor Constantine Palaiologos and all the other brave defenders in the fall of Constantinople in 1453".

In the early morning of the 29th of May the church bells rang and the Greek flags flew at half-mast.
This annual commemoration is a simple and devout one.

Many elderly people remember their origins who risked their lives joining the protest movement during the time under Turkish rule.

The first Sunday after 15 of November there is Pan-Chian commemoration in the catedral, for the heroes who were killed in a crucial battle on Epos, for the liberation of the island in 1912.

At the end, there is a most holy in front of the marble shrine of the heroes bones, which is in the porch of the church. After that there is a cortege by common people and the state who come up to the mountain "Epos", where the historical battle took place. There is a requiem where they lay wreaths on the hero's tomb, while a platoon of foot men throw greeting shots in the air.
